Vueling (2005/2006) [completo]

Vueling is a Spanish low cost airline (although the airline markets itself as a new generation airline) which started in 2004. From the very beginning, Vueling has branded itself as a dynamic, young and trendy airline, pretty much with the help of their nice logo and brand design.

A 2005/2006  Vueling winter timetable, issued as a single, folded sheet of paper. Still, the layout and design are nicer than many other airlines. In 2005, Vueling was still a pretty small carrier.

Vueling merged with Clickair, Iberia's low cost carrier, in 2009. In a few years the route network has expanded very fast, as you can see in this map taken from their website:

Air Comet

Air Comet was a Spanish airline with a strong focus on South American routes from their Madrid hub, with some European destinations as well. The airline shut down on december 21st, without any previous announcement, leaving thousands of stranded passengers behind. Actually, there was much gossip about the unprofitability and mismanagement of Air Comet, so for the aviation-savvy the shut down was not so surprising. Air Comet employees had been working for several months without being paid, for instance. Air Comet's crisis strongly remembers what happened with Air Madrid. Ironically enough, Air comet inherited most of Air Madrid destinations and aircraft some years ago...

Some Air comet inflight magazines:

A magazine from 2007. The airline was introducing their new uniforms as part of their new identity. You can have a look at a letter by Diaz Ferrán, who was Air Comet's CEO and who recently said he would not have bought a ticket in his own airline, given the carrier reputation :/

A magazine from 2008 and some advertesiments:

Two magazines from 2009. You can tell by looking at the maps that the airline was shutting down destinations and routes, and still they were boasting about their Business Class and a fairly fancy entertainement system onboard. Also, they even announced their plans for buying the A380...

Just one video more after the christmas special I posted last day: a nice and original video shot in Lisbon airport, by TAP Portugal and ANA (portuguese civil aviation authority and airport operator)

¡Feliz navidad! Merry christmas !

Something a bit different for today's post : Some videos featuring Christmas commercials from some airlines, just to be in the right mood :)

The most original spot I've seen so far this year is Vueling's (the Spanish low cost airline) Vueling together, featuring their own employees doing a lip dub at their headquaters over David Ghetta's song When love takes over.

For some people, Vueling has just ripped away the idea from this other video. Nevertheless, I like this one very much: it is fun, nice and trendy, very much in line with Vueling's image mark as a trendy and cool airline. Airlines are usually very conservative business, and Spanish airlines have been no excepction so far. Also, it is obviously a marketing product, but again, I think it is a very well done one.

Iberia has also shot a Christmas commercial this year, like it has been doing for some years now. In stark contrast with Vueling, Iberia's video is far too serious and in my opinion a bit dull...

Actually, I liked this video, shot last year, much more...

Y este otro, de 2005
And also this one, from 2005

Y dos anuncios más, de 2006 y 2007
Two more Iberia ads, from 2006 and 2007

The Concorde was British Airways flasghip and I think BA did a better work of promoting it than Air France, at least during the 80's and 90's. In 1989, the Concorde was still in use in the London-New York route (the iconic BA 001 flight), with onward connections to Washington and Miami. Also, there were some odd Barbados flights, seemelingly to cater the winter holiday season.

Iberia (1974), horario preliminar [completo]

✈✈✈ ✈✈✈ ✈✈✈ ✈✈✈ ✈✈✈ ✈✈✈ ✈✈✈ ✈✈✈ ✈✈✈

An advance edition of the Iberia 1974 timetable. Like most carriers at the time, it uses the more cumbersome, yet somewhat charming, tabular format, instead of the "quick reference" which most carriers use today. This timetable also included Aviaco domestic flights in Spain and also the international routes flown by Air Panama (OP, table number 9) since Iberia owned shares of this airline at the time.

The interior pages of this brochure are rather simple and spartan, as if they were made by a simple typewriter, and the sole remarcable feature is the interesting and colourful route map. Instead, it is very interesting to browse this brochure. At the time, DC-10 and 727 were being introduced and they were used side by side with older aircrafts such as the DC-8 and the Caravelle.

The route network included some domestic destinations such as Córdoba (an airport where no scheduled flight has landed for years, save for a the very short lived Flysur) and some interesting African services, the result of the late colonial Spanish activity in Africa. There are also some interesting examples of flights to/from Spain by foreing carriers, such as the Viasa flight from Caracas to Beirut with an intermediate stop at Madrid.
