Today, June 10th, is the Portuguese National Day, celebrating Portugal and the Portuguese communities overseas, so it is just the perfect timing to publish this post about the Asian adventure of TAP Air portugal.

In the late 90's, just before Portugal surrended its last Asian colony to China, the Portuguese government was busy at Macau. The airport was opened in 1995, and the flag carrier flew from Lisbon to Macau from 1996 to 1998.

At first, TAP codeshared with Sabena, with an intermediate stop at Brussels. Despite the introductory low fares and the heavy marketing, the loads were not as high as expected. Starting in the Winter 97/98 season, a new Asian destination was introduced at Bangkok, and also Macau was promoted as an Asian gateway to Hong Kong and other Chinese cities.

There was a great political interest behind this air link, and little commercial profit. The airline lots heaps of money and the only TAP attempt at the Asian market was terminated swiftly. In this article you can read an analysis of why the route did not work commercially, partly because of the lack of cooperation between Air Macau and the airport authorities. TAP, in fact, ended up selling its stake in Air Macau a few years after the colony ceased to be Portuguese.

On the other hand, Portugal at the time was a very different country, in an euphoric mood, and it was also hosting the 1998 World Expo at Lisbon, so there is also lots of promotion about this inside the Air Portugal brochures and magazines. It turned out, that the Expo dragged the country into a financial crisis which was just a prelude of the current one...
